Aamir Khan recalls having ‘tons of argument’ with Kiran Rao during Laapataa Ladies shoot, reveals how Indians would react if it wins Oscars

Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao recently united for film Laapataa Ladies. The film telling small town tale of two brides whose life turn upside down. The film for its content and immense praise has become India’s official entry to the Oscars. In an interview with BBC, the actor shares how Indians would react if the film wins Academy Award. He also recalls having tons of argument with ex-wiife Kiran Rao while directing the film.

When asked what would it mean to him to win Oscar for India, Aamir Khan replied, “I am not quite sure how seriously to take a competition. But I would be really happy. It would create tremendous opportunity for the film to be seen by a lot more people because when a film wins an Oscar or Academy award, then people from around the world want to see what it’s like. So it opens a huge window of opportunity for a larger audience for a film.”

He further added how Indians will react if Laapataa Ladies wins Oscar and said, “More important than that, I think Indian are so film crazy and we have been dying to win an Academy Award for an Indian film which hasn’t happened till now. So the country would go ballistic. They’ll just go mad if we win. So just for the people of our country, I’d be very happy if we win the award.”

Aamir Khan on having arguments with Kiran Rao

The actor revealed why he chose his ex-wife, Kiran Rao, as the director of the movie. “I think the reason I chose her is because I know she will be honest with it, and that’s what I wanted, and that’s what it needed”, says actor.

When asked if they had any arguments working together, the actor nodded. He laughingly said, “Arguments on the film. Oh yeah! Tons. I mean, we can’t make a film with an argument. We argue every point, and we have strong opinions.” Talking about their professional relationship, he quipped, “She is a great person, and I am not too bad, so we get along well, and we love each other and respect each other.”

For context, Aamir and Kiran met on the set of Lagaan in 2001, married in December 2005, and separated in 2021. They continue to co-parent their son, Azad Rao Khan, and Kiran is often seen attending family gatherings.
