Vikrant Massey On Playing A Blind Character In Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan

When asked how liberating it was to play a blind character in Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan from an actor’s vanity, Vikrant Massey said, “It was very… to be naked in front of the camera, I would say. And thank you for asking this, because it was so liberating. You know me, and you’ve known me for years. I’ve never really been the ‘vanity’ type, and you knew that, which is why you asked. But yes, it truly was liberating—for both of us. And if I may speak for both of us, there’s a line in the film that sums up the answer to this question perfectly.”

He added, “It’s in the film, and I think even in the trailer, where she asks me, ‘Arrey jaan, what are you doing? Speak softly, people are watching.’ And I reply, ‘Why should I care? I can’t see them anyway.’ That’s exactly what it felt like. There were so many people around us, she had a blindfold on, and I had lenses in, and we honestly didn’t care. We were just in that moment. And like she said, present in all honesty and sincerity. If something didn’t feel right, we would just do it again. But the purity of what I was feeling at that moment was so incredible that in some scenes where we had to smile or laugh, you’ll see when you watch it—we were actually playing off each other’s sounds. And if it didn’t land, we’d just take a retake.”

Vikrant On Trusting Director, Co-Star

Concluding, the actor said, “But this thing you asked about liberation, it was truly liberating, because you’re not conscious of who’s watching or what’s happening around you, or what the eye-line is. Normally, half the time you’re adjusting the eye-line or asking for monitor checks, but here, we didn’t need to run to the monitor. It was about trust. You had to trust your director and trust each other a lot because you’re playing off one another. And mostly, if the director said it was right, then it was right. Of course, there were times when I felt, ‘No, this isn’t okay, I want to go again,’ and that’s fair. But ultimately, you have to trust your director and your co-actor. So yeah, it was wonderful. It was very liberating.”
