Amitabh Bachchan’s Don Director Chandra Barot Passes Aways At 86; Farhan Akthar & Other Celebs Pay Tribute

Veteran filmmaker Chandra Barot, best known for directing the iconic 1978 film Don starring Amitabh Bachchan, passed away on July 20 at the age of 86. He had been suffering from pulmonary fibrosis for the past seven years and was admitted to Guru Nanak Hospital. His wife, Deepa Barot, confirmed the news.

Barot’s passing has left the film industry and fans in mourning. Tributes have poured in from Bollywood, with many remembering his creative brilliance and unique storytelling.

Filmmaker Farhan Akhtar, who directed the Don remakes and is working on Don 3, shared a heartfelt message, “Saddened to learn that the director of the OG Don is no more. RIP Chandra Barot-ji. Deepest condolences to the family.”

Director Kunal Kohli also paid tribute, recalling his early experience working with Barot. “Chandra ji RIP sir. The only director I assisted… what an enriching experience! He was remarkably sharp and full of stories. Thank you for giving us Don, one of Indian cinema’s most stylish films.”

Chandra Barot began his film journey in the 1970s as an assistant director. He worked on popular films like Purab Aur Pachhim, Yaadgar (1970), Shor (1972), and Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974). His directorial debut, Don, became a massive success and remains a cult classic.

Beyond Don, he directed Bengali films like Aashrita (1989) and Pyar Bhara Dil (1991). Some of his projects were shelved, but his storytelling left a deep impact. Chandra Barot may be gone, but his work continues to influence Indian cinema. He gave us unforgettable stories, and his legacy as the man who brought Don to life will be remembered forever.
