The highly controversial Indo-Pak film Abir Gulaal, starring Bollywood’s Vaani Kapoor and Pakistani actor Fawad Khan, is finally scheduled for its global release date on August 29. But with a significant exception: India will not be included. Due to ongoing diplomatic tensions, Abir Gulaal will not be released in India on August 29.
Abir Gulaal Gets A Worldwide Release Date
Months after its Indian release was halted following the Pahalgam terror attack, Abir Gulaal is set for a global release date on August 29. The romantic comedy featured Fawad Khan and Vaani Kapoor. A source close to the film disclosed that it will open in over 75 countries. “Abir Gulaal will be released on August 29 worldwide except in India. It is releasing in 75 countries like the UK, UAE, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand,” the source told PTI.
The film has been directed by Aarti S Bagdi. It was originally scheduled for Indian release on May 9. But faced cancellation amid the controversy following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam. This incident resulted in 26 fatalities.
Why Was The Film Banned?
Many trade organisations, including the All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) and the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE), reiterated their stance. They called for a ban on Pakistani artists in the Indian film industry. As a result, the release of Abir Gulaal, which would have marked Fawad Khan’s return to Indian cinema, was cancelled.
Additionally, the social media accounts of Fawad Khan and several other prominent Pakistani celebrities such as Hania Aamir, Mahira Khan, Ali Zafar, Atif Aslam, and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan continue to be restricted in India. Tensions further escalated after the Indian armed forces conducted strikes on nine terror camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) on May 7, in an operation dubbed Operation Sindoor.
Abir Gulaal is produced by Indian Stories and A Richer Lens Entertainment. The producers were Vivek Agrawal, Avantika Hari, and Rakesh Sippy.
