Ali Fazal Reveals How He Got Aamir Khan’s 3 Idiots

When asked if he was excited to say yes to 3 Idiots because of it being an Aamir Khan, Ali Fazal said, “No, I don’t know—he was part of it first? I don’t know. I just got a call from a dear friend at the time, Mrunmayee Lagoo and I think she was working with Raju sir. And, I had done a stage play or something with her… whatever we had done on stage before, so that’s how she remembered me. She told me that he had seen me somewhere or something, and yeah.”

Adding further about his role as Joy Lobo, “It’s actually with Vidhu sir, Vidhu Vinod Chopra. I mean, in my mind, that was the one, you know? A big benchmark. And so, that’s how Parinda was—Parinda was like, ‘Man, where are we going?’ Apart from all of his films, of course, I’ve been a big fan of his work. I’m doing a Rajkumar Hirani film? Yeah, I mean, then I got to know, and it was nice, sweet—like, ‘Okay, interesting. This’ll be fun.’”

Ali Fazal On Depression

Ali Fazal speaks on the challenges of students from a science background. When asked if he ever slipped into depression, the actor said, “Nothing like that. It got depressing when I heard the news later, after the release and everything. Because it resonated with a lot of engineering students, and when something that dark resonates, then it makes you feel quite shitty—because then those kinds of events started to pop up. That was scary, and I wasn’t used to it. I was in college myself, and I had seen that world. I come from a science background, so I know that pressure. And then you hear actual news of people going through that—ending their lives because of it, because of whatever reasons, the pressures of study, performance, and marks that are supposed to get you that straight path… yeah.”
