Varun Dhawan Reveals Being Starstruck Shooting Border 2 With Sunny Deol

Set to release during the 2026 Republic Day weekend, Border 2 is an epic war drama inspired by the real-life bravery of the Indian Armed Forces that promises scale, emotions and a heavy dose of patriotism. At the film’s teaser launch today, Varun Dhawan struck an emotional note as he opened up about stepping into a role that has deeply moved him, both as an actor and as an individual.

Overwhelmed by the moment, Varun even touched Sunny Deol’s feet, calling it one of the biggest honours of his career. Read on to know everything he had to say.

Varun Dhawan On Working With His Childhood Hero

Speaking at the event, Varun admitted that despite years in the industry, Border 2 has made him nervous in a way he hadn’t felt in a long time. “After many years, I’m actually nervous about my film,” he said, hinting at the responsibility that comes with being part of such an iconic franchise.

Calling Sunny Deol his childhood hero, Varun expressed gratitude for the opportunity to share screen space with the veteran actor. “The biggest thing for me was that I was working with Sunny Deol.” Varun also recalled how Sunny would often arrive on set and quietly observe the shoot, despite being a megastar. “Sunny sir, would just come and watch. He was doing it only to make me comfortable,” Varun shared.

Varun’s Pinch-Me Moment

Recounting his first scene with Sunny Deol, Varun described it as a surreal, pinch-me moment. “When he called out my character’s name, ‘Hoshiar’, I was completely awestruck,” he said. Varun added that he immediately went back to director Anurag Singh and told him, “Yeh toh ekdum Sunny Deol jaisa kar rahe hain.” “He has been my hero throughout my childhood, and seeing him in front of me like that, I can’t explain how huge it was for me,” Varun added, smiling. “My inner child was the happiest that day.”

Talking about portraying an army officer for the first time, Varun said playing Major Hoshiar Singh Dahiya, PVC, a Param Vir Chakra awardee, is a moment of immense pride for him. “I hope his family likes the film,” he said, before adding, “More than anything, I want the Armed Forces to like it. And I hope when our children watch this film, they feel inspired to join the Armed Forces.”

As Border 2 gears up for its Republic Day release, Varun Dhawan’s emotional connection with the film reflects the scale of responsibility and reverence attached to the project, one that aims to honour heroes, inspire future generations, and celebrate the spirit of the nation.
