Thamma – the fifth film in the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe, is all set to release on October 21 and the hype surrounding it is at an all time high. Starring Ayushmann Khurrana, Rashmika Mandanna, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Paresh Rawal in pivotal roles, the film is directed by Aditya Sarpotdar and is believed to be based on the supernatural mythical creatures- vampires. But is it true? Announced as Vampires of Vijay Nagar in June 2024, the film was renamed Thamma in September 2024.
Now, with just days left until the supernatural horror-comedy film releases, the film’s lead stars – ‘Alok Goyal’ Ayushmann Khurrana and ‘Yakshasan’ Nawazuddin Siddiqui sat down for an exclusive chat with Bollywood Bubble host Ankita Bhalla. During the fun, but informative interaction, Khurrana opened up about the film not being about vampires but betaal – a creature from Indian folklore. Read on to know all he said
Ayushmann Khurrana: The Most Powerful Betaal Is Thamma
Clarifying that Thamma is not about vampires but about betaals – an evil spirit from Indian folklore who haunts cemeteries and takes demonic possession of corpses, Ayushmann Khurrana said, “Hum isko bolte hain betaalism (not vampirism). Betaal hai hai, vampire nahi. It’s based in Indian folklore. Thamma humare film ka naam hai, Ashvatthama se iska (naam liya hai). Thamma from Ashvatthama, Dinesh Vijan hain yeh. Unhone ne idea nikala and the most powerful betaal is Thamma.”
