Arbaaz Khan is all set for the release release of his debut horror film, Kaal Trigori. Directed by Nitin Vaidya, the supernatural thriller also stars Mahesh Manjrekar, Aditya Srivastav, Rituparna Sengupta, Rajesh Sharma and Mugdha Godse in pivotal roles. Ahead of the film’s release, Arbaaz sat down for a quick chat with Bollywood Bubble and got candid about the rise in horror-comedies in Bollywood and whether horror films should be more serious. Read on to know his views.
Arbaaz Khan On Horror Films Being Infused More With Comedy Than Seriousness
When asked if he’s okay with horror films becoming infused with more comedy now and not being serious horror films, Arbaaz replied, “There is no hard and fast rule It’s like saying agar ek romantic film ho toh usme sirf romance hona chahiye, comedy, emotions nahi hona chahiye. I think hum ultimately films audience ke liye banate hai, toh agar audience ko ek horror film mein little bit of comedy (mile) toh aacha lagta hai.”
He continued, “Humesha ek comedian agar horror film mein hoga, ya ek comic situation hoga – jaha aapko lagta hai ki dhar hona chahiye but it turns out to be a false alarm, toh humour aata hai (film) mein, then suddenly yhe real thing happens. Toh that kind of plays with the audience, (there’s a) give and take, it’s very necessary. I think whenever there is humour, in anything, it could be in a thriller, in a drama, comedy mein toh hona hi chahiye, in a suspense film, it always works.”
He concluded, “So I don’t see that a horror film should purely be a horror film with no room for any relief or comic experience. You can choose to do that, but I feel if it is integrated well, cause agar humour just for the heck of it daloge toh kaam nahi karega, it will fall flat. It has to be blended very well. If it is, then the combination is very lethal.”
Arbaaz On Making His Horror Film Debut
Talking about debuting in the horror genre, Arbaaz Khan said, “I think (yeh) maine pehle film hai joh maine script-wise horror film ki hai. I’m hoping this genre also – currently, it’s a very popular genre. Agar aap dhekhe, film industry ke andar horror genre has been there for the longest time. Bahut si films pehle bhi banti thi joh horror banti thi, jaise Ramsay Brothers banate the. Baad mein bahut se logo ne attempt ki films banana.”
He continued, “Aur horror films jab bani hai – aur aachi banti hai aur typically agar uske andar music aacha hota hai, toh then that combination of a horror film with good music is a lethal combination. It always works. So, if it’s well made and interesting, we are looking for… I’m happy ki picture aachi bani hai. There’s a certain section of the audience that like such films. Toh we are hopeful people will come and patronise this film.”
