Chitrangda Singh On Beauty Standards In Bollywood

When asked about the shifting beauty standards in Bollywood, Chitrangda Singh said, “I think right now, we are all collectively—across the whole country—feeling very proud. Every Indian is very proud of being an Indian, proud of our culture, our skin colour, our food, our songs, our traditions, and our history. I think now, maybe because we’ve travelled so much and people have more exposure, there’s been a shift. We no longer want to be like the West. We’re very proud of being Indian. And I think that is slowly starting to reflect through audiences, even in films. I’ve always felt that cinema is a reflection of society what’s going on around us.”

She added, “An average girl in college today is proud of who she is. She’s comfortable in her skin. She says, ‘This is my size, this is what I’m wearing, this is who I am. This is how traditional I am, and I want to wear a saree.’ That kind of confidence is now reflected in cinema. So I feel that it’s thanks to the audience that such a big shift has come, especially among the women of this country. That’s why there’s been a huge change in the industry. Even the audience is no longer so male-dominated.”

Chitrangda Singh Reflects On Societal Growth

She concluded, “Women form a huge part of the audience now, and they’re making the decisions about which films to watch. There’s financial independence. There are many factors influencing this. But yes, you’re right, we are in a far better place now. People are proud of being dusky. Brown skin is seen as a good thing. People want to be brown and beautiful. And yes, you’re right, no more size zero obsession. We’re happy with our curvy Indian bodies. Yes, and I’m very happy with that too.”
