From Victim to Voice: Sowmya’s brave revelation of grooming and sexual assault in film industry

The recent disclosures made by Malayalam actress Sowmya have generated considerable attention and concern regarding the widespread culture of sexual assault in film industry. In a poignant interview with NDTV, she revealed her traumatic experiences of being groomed and sexually assaulted by a Tamil film director at the tender age of 18. This revelation follows the Hema Committee report, which has encouraged numerous women within the industry to come forward and share their own stories of sexual assault in the film industry.

The report from the Hema Committee is named in honor of Justice K. Hema, who led the committee set up by the Kerala government in 2017. This committee was created to address growing apprehensions regarding harassment and gender discrimination in the Malayalam film industry, especially in light of a notable incident that involved the abduction and sexual assault of an actress.

Sowmya, who rose to prominence in the 1990s, recounted that her entry into the film industry was shrouded in the pretense of familial affection. The director, who approached her in the company of his wife, referred to her as “daughter,” thereby constructing an illusion of care and safety. This manipulation formed part of a grooming strategy that ultimately resulted in profound mental and sexual abuse. Sowmya described how she was initially captivated by the allure of cinema, inspired by local actors, which rendered her susceptible to the director’s predatory advances.

Psychological Manipulation and the Impact of Sexual Assault in Film Industry

Sowmya recounted her initial experiences with the director and his wife, who treated her kindly, offering her food and compliments. In hindsight, she recognized this behavior as part of a grooming strategy. She felt coerced into accepting the acting role after the director suggested to her father that a substantial investment had been made in her screen test, effectively pressuring her family to comply. Although she expressed discomfort during their first meeting, she felt compelled to proceed with the film project.

As filming continued, the director’s conduct became increasingly inappropriate. He frequently employed the “angry silent treatment,” a tactic that instilled fear and ensured her compliance. On one occasion, when his wife was not present, he overstepped boundaries by kissing her, leaving her feeling paralyzed and humiliated. This incident marked the onset of a year-long period of sexual abuse, during which the director further manipulated her by referring to her as his daughter and expressing a desire to have a child with her.

Sowmya elaborated on the abuse she suffered, characterizing it as a calculated exploitation of her vulnerabilities. The director’s assaults included coerced sexual acts, which she felt powerless to resist due to the psychological manipulation he exerted. The trauma from these experiences left her feeling trapped and bewildered, as she struggled with the shame and guilt imposed by her abuser.

In a deeply troubling disclosure, she recounted an incident in which the director used a rod on her genitals as a means of “entertainment,” underscoring the severe nature of the abuse she endured. Such actions not only infringed upon her bodily autonomy but also caused profound psychological trauma that may take decades to overcome.

Sowmya’s choice to come forward is part of a larger movement within the Malayalam film industry, where numerous women are now bravely sharing their experiences of abuse and harassment. She has indicated her willingness to disclose the identity of her abuser to the special investigation team established by the Kerala government to investigate these claims. Reflecting on her journey, Sowmya remarked, “It took 30 years for me to heal and recover from this sense of shame.” She encouraged other survivors to step forward and share their stories, highlighting the critical need to break the silence surrounding such abuses.
