A new legal controversy has emerged just days before the release of Haq, starring Yami Gautam Dhar and Emraan Hashmi. The legal heirs of Shah Bano Begum have filed a petition in the Indore High Court, seeking an immediate stay on the film’s release, which is scheduled for November 7.
Shah Bano Begum’s Family Moves Court
According to reports, the petition filed by Advocate Tousif Warsi on behalf of the family claims that the movie misrepresents Sharia law and could hurt the sentiments of the Muslim community. The family also alleges that the filmmakers did not seek permission or legal rights from Shah Bano’s heirs before using her story. The Indore High Court is expected to hear the matter soon.
The film’s producers are being represented by lawyers Hitesh Jain, Parinaam Law, and Ameet Naik from Naik & Naik. Despite the controversy, Haq has drawn attention online, with its trailer receiving positive responses for its powerful courtroom drama and social themes.
Earlier, a legal notice had already been issued to the makers, accusing them of depicting Shah Bano’s personal life without authorisation and violating her privacy and publicity rights. Advocate Tousif Warsi told India Today that the family has concerns about how certain events might have been portrayed, adding that the storyline should be disclosed to the legal heirs before release.
As per the filmmakers, Haq starts as a love story but evolves into an intense courtroom drama that tackles sensitive issues such as women’s rights and the ongoing debate around the Uniform Civil Code under Article 44 of the Indian Constitution. Whether the film will release as planned or face a legal delay now depends on the court’s upcoming decision.
